Digital artist Scorpion Dagger (James Kerr) transports his irreverent cast of art history cut-outs on a surreal vacation through Japan, blending classical imagery with modern chaos to explore cultural collision, transformation, and playful absurdity.

Scorpion Dagger (James Kerr) is a digital artist based in Montreal, Canada. He is best known for his short animations where he mixes cut outs from various paintings from art history to create a world where he comments on our modern age, and pop culture in general. Most of the inspiration for his work comes from simply being out in the world, walking around, and interacting with both friends and strangers. For Scorpion Dagger, ideas are everywhere, if you open your eyes to them.

His upcoming show at UltraSuperNew is largely inspired from his trip to Japan last summer. Scorpion Dagger definitely fell in love, and was flooded with plenty of ideas. From it’s (seemingly) chaotic cities, to it’s incredibly stunning rural landscapes, the small sliver of what Scorpion experienced was the impetus for him to want explore what would happen if he took his regular characters on vacation with him; Cut them out from their usual scenes, and mix them into his Japanese experience.

Would they seem out of place? Would they be welcomed? How would they be changed by Japan? Over the years, Scorpion Dagger began to spill out from the internet and into the real world in galleries in the US, Canada, and across Europe. As well, he regularly does commissioned art for clients not limited to The Cluny Museum, The New York Times, Gucci, Adult Swim, Fender, and the Bavarian State Opera.

He’s also written and produced music videos for such bands as Brockhampton, Tommy Cash, Wolf Parade, Metz, Remo Drive, and more. Staying with music, James also had a title credit for his animation in the documentary on Iggy and Stooges “Gimme Danger” by Jim Jarmusch.
