Shinichi Kaneko explores the theme of "interconnectedness" by symbolically using theintertwined hands and feet depicted in Shunga as visual metaphors. In YumeUtsutsu, the artist investigates moments where dream and reality merge ambiguously, drawing from his own creative experience. The exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on how we perceivethe world and how we interpret the relationships that shape it.

The term “YumeUtsutsu” refers to the moment when the boundary between dream and reality becomes blurred, a concept that has been used for centuries. For me, it represents a realm where the tangible and intangible, the conscious and the unconscious, intersect, and it serves as a space to explore the relationship between perception and reality. My work is inspired by the intertwined hands and feet depicted in Shunga (Japanese Ukiyo-e Erotic Art), using them as a metaphor to explore the theme of “interconnection.” This “interconnection” refers to all forms of interaction and relationships that link people, things, and phenomena. The hands and feet in Shunga transcend mere physical depictions and are reinterpreted as metaphors to symbolize these complex relationships.

Our reality is shaped by a convergence of coincidence, necessity, and imagination.

Through the perspective of “YumeUtsutsu,” I hope to inspire a renewed awareness of the hidden “interconnections” within our daily lives.

Shinichi Kaneko

Shinichi Kaneko, who holds an M.F.A. in Design from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (2001), explores the theme of "interconnectedness" in his art. He metaphorically depicts connected limbs, drawing inspiration from Ukiyo-e Shunga, and expresses these concepts across various media including sculpture, painting, and drawing. His extensive exhibition history includes numerous solo shows at venues such as Gallery Miyasaka (2005–2024) and Daikanyama Tsutaya (2022), as well as participation in significant group exhibitions like MEET YOUR ART FESTIVAL (2024) and East Asia Culture City – China-Japan-Korea Sculpture Invitational Exhibition (2023). Since 2018, his drawings have also been prominently featured in monthly advertisements for iichiko shochu.
