Asuka Irie

Asuka's work is created using a unique technique in which copperplate prints are printed on Japanese paper, collaged, and then colored with watercolors and other paints. Collage prints determine the colors of mixed media pieces. Asuka print various colors and designs on several types of washi paper with different thicknesses and
textures, treating them as if they were paint.
When Asuka was thinking about how to make a living as an artist, she realized that with copperplate printing it was impossible to produce works that were larger than the size of the press. She also wanted to find a way to maintain the quality of copperplate prints while still allowing greater freedom of expression. After much trial and error, she has been able to break free from size restrictions by collaging copperplate prints, while at the same time challenging
herself to create her own unique worldview by freely painting with paint.
